New or Used from China: Which Is Cheaper to Clear
Many assume a used car is always cheaper. When importing to Uzbekistan that's not always true: a car's age directly affects the duty rate and recycling fee. Sometimes a new car works out cheaper than a used one. Here's how to think about it.
How age affects duty (for ICE and regular hybrids)
- New (under 1 year): 15% duty + a per-cm³ charge.
- 1–3 years: 30% duty + a higher per-cm³ charge.
- Over 3 years: 40% duty + an even higher per-cm³ charge, plus a higher recycling fee.
So the older a petrol car, the HIGHER the duty rate. The saving on a used car's price can be entirely eaten up by higher clearance.
For EVs, age works differently
EVs get 0% duty at any age, but the recycling fee for cars over 3 years is higher (210 BHM vs 120 BHM for a new one). And on a used EV the battery's health is the key asset. Buying a new EV is often the smarter move: full battery warranty and maximum lifespan.
When each wins
- New is cheaper if: it's an ICE/hybrid (low 15% duty) or an EV where warranty and battery health matter.
- Used can be cheaper if: it's a 1–3-year car with a good history and a big discount to the new price that outweighs the clearance difference.
How to decide
Calculate BOTH options in the calculator — it accounts for age and powertrain — and compare the final "in your hands" price, not just the seller's sticker. How age-based charges work is in the customs guide. Models and prices in the catalog.
